About Sean May

Sean May is the founder of Science of Imagery and Teach Me 1 Thing. He is also the co-founder of Wynbi, Inc. and a Thinking Into Results consultant. He helps individuals and companies reach their personal and professional goals and helps companies increase revenue.

My life story

I was born in Jackson, Wyoming where my family has lived for many generations. I’m actually 6th generation in Jackson as my family was one of the original settlers of the area. When I was 3 years old my parents had me start playing tennis which consumed most of my younger years. I was either at a tournament in the intermountain region or at the tennis club practicing.

I grew up around athletes and entrepreneurs. My grandparents and parents owned multiple businesses and always told me the only way to really be successful is to own your own business. A couple quotes I remember them saying is “you can either make someone else rich or you can make yourself rich” and “you need to work smarter, not harder.” These definitely stuck with me because my motto is always “worker smarter, not harder.”

Entrepreneurship

Growing up I didn’t know what type of business I would want to create. I knew I didn’t really want to take over my parent’s businesses because they weren’t in the industry I was interested in but I hadn’t found something I was really passionate about yet. I was pretty good at math and science throughout school so I decided to go into Mechanical Engineering in college. I went to school at California Polytechnic State University, also known as Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. After three years in engineering I realized I didn’t really like what I was doing and knew I didn’t want to make a career out of my education so I moved over to Economics, Finance and Statistics. I found this much more enjoyable so after five years at school I finally graduated with a degree in Quantitative Economics.

The entrepreneur bug still hadn’t quite hit me right out of school. I got a job in San Francisco at a Financial Technology firm where I was working as customer support. It was a great company and I loved my boss and all my co-workers but I felt something was lacking. I was learning a great deal but it felt like I was going against everything my parents and grandparents had taught me. The words, you must own your own business to have financial freedom rang in the back of my mind. After about a year being at that company I received a call from an old friend that I grew up playing tennis with and we were actually college roommates our freshman year. He said he was starting a company and he thought I might be interested in the idea. We talked for a few hours that night and he explained the whole idea to me. I’ll admit, at that point I wasn’t 100% sure exactly what the idea was but I knew it had great potential and something I wanted to be a part of.

Wynbi

I moved out to Park City, Utah in May 2012 to get my first taste of starting my own business and trying to get it off the ground. At first it just seemed like chaos. There was no routine, no set schedule and no guidelines for how to make sure the bills were paid and the doors stayed open. Because of this it was one of the best learning experiences of my life. I learned more in one month at Wynbi than I did in an entire year at my previous job.

After a while though, things hit a snag. We created our first product but no one used it. We thought it was a great product that was completely free for non-profits. It was new and innovative but we had missed a HUGE step. We never tested to make sure that anyone wanted this product. We made a very rookie mistake, we didn’t validate our product. We kept trying to get clients with no success.

Back To The Drawing Board

So we had a product that no one seemed to want but we had built a really strong foundation for the software that we could build other products on top of. This time, for the better, we knew before we started we needed to validate an idea before going into another 10 month development cycle. This time we wanted to help companies with their talent pool and current employees. We tested a couple different ideas but finally settled on what we called Jobs by Wynbi. It allows companies to instantly see the top candidates in their job pool for every available job and its unique feature is the companies’ employees are included for each job so if a current employee is the best fit for another job within the company they will be included automatically and will never be skipped over for a promotion they deserve.

We came up with this idea because we had experienced being skipped over for promotions because we didn’t “formally” apply for another job at our company. We as the employees needed to search job sites for open positions at our own company and apply to the job if we wanted to be considered for the job (promotion). We found some solutions that had already been created but we weren’t happy with any of them so we decided to create our own. We also talked to businesses in our area to see if they were having this problem and a majority said yes. We told them our solution and asked if they wanted to be our first customer once the product was created and that is how we got our first customers.

Moving On

Wynbi started to take off yet internally I was having some issues. The business relationship that I had with my friend was starting to deteriorate. We weren’t on the same page any more and I started working on a couple side projects that I thought would be best for Wynbi. Now at times I think this is productive but in this case it was causing a lot of conflict because we weren’t working well as a team. I knew something had to change and so did my partner. He was by far the majority shareholder so that is how I experienced getting fired for the first time.

It was surprisingly an experience that taught me many lessons that I have no regret about. Also, this experience implanted the entrepreneur bug in me which I think I will have for the rest of my life.

Today

My life today is focused on bringing others value. I have started three more companies, Science of Imagery, Convert411 and Teach Me 1 Thing. They are all works in progress and I’m working very hard to get them both up and running very soon. They are focused on bringing the best out of yourself and reminding everyone that they have a tremendous value to the world and others.

My number one goal over the next few years is to create a multi-million dollar company while helping others. My great passion is being able to inspire others to live a life they are passionate about. To not only work smarter but to work towards life goals.

I hope this story may inspire you to go after your dreams and remember laughter is always the best medicine.

Best of luck to you in all that you aspire to accomplish. Feel free to leave me a comment if you have any questions.

  1. I have a nonprofit. Its name is Development of Hope Centers, Inc. No, it is not up and going but I do practice with those around me.
Here is one thing I found to improve the self-atmosphere of someone with an unruly child:
Give the baby/child a big smile, then, [keeping that smile in place] look at the person “in charge” and they will suddenly change their expression into smile, their shoulders relax and the child quiets down.

Also you tell us to share one of your posters, but it does not copy. I would change the beer suggestion to healthy snacks. I have a friend in the AA program. He was alcohol free for 10 years, drunk again for an unspecified time and now is again alcohol free for 10 years. I had no idea it was so hard for some. And my personal limit is one for the evening. [And, no, the glass is not bottomless.]

Thank you so much for your comment.

That is awesome about Development of Hope Centers! I wish you the best in that endeavor.

Also, thank you for the tip with unruly children and also letting us know the share buttons didn’t work. We updated them and they should be working now.

  3. Wow, it’s good to know that there are other Wyoming big thinkers and innovators out there. Helps you feel more like the world really is a small place when you hear about other successful people actually admit that they are from a state that is not so populated. Maybe there is still hope for those of us who still live there.

    • Hi Chasity,

Thank you for your comment. Haha, Wyoming sometimes gets a bad reputation for not being very innovative but I have seen a huge surge in Jackson recently with people starting their passion projects and being very successful. It has really gotten me excited to work with others in the community and help in any way I can. I look forward to hearing about your success as a fellow Wyoming native 🙂

  4. Hi Sean

I downloaded your free mp3 and my question is how did you come to develop this particular mp3 and do you use it yourself to effect changes? Also is this something you will be developing into different areas?

    • Hi Elsa,

Thank you for comment and questions.

I have been interested in creating my own music and audio production since high school. I have also done meditations in the past and have received great benefit from them so I decided to create my own. I have a small studio in my office and was able to create it using software that creates binaural beats and then overlaid my own vocals with different effects. I do use the meditation every morning while I’m doing breathing and relaxation exercises. I really enjoy it because I always feel very energized and ready for day when I do this. I have been working on expanding my knowledge of different meditations and their benefits and would definitely like to develop them in different areas as well.

  9. Hi Sean,
I just read your bio. You did a great writing job until almost to the end. Under the heading Today you wanted to say work smarter but instead it reads worker smarter. I have been considering, seriously, offering website corrections to businesses. Any ideas? Like your work!

    • Hi Cecilia,

Thank you so much for your comment and letting me know about the typo.

I updated and it should be correct now 🙂

That is a great idea! If you find a large blog with a lot of new content, they usually need an editor/second set of eyes to make sure everything looks good.

  11. Hi Sean,
I signed up for 7 free meditations on March 15 but can’t remember how I found out about them. I just listened to your Chakra meditation and was so impressed that I had to find out more about you and what you are doing. I’m listening to the money meditation now. Keep up the great work!

  12. Hi Sean

The internet now from an email promo perspective has in my experience a higher content of liars , mostly affiliates who pedal false and harmful promises. So when sincerity shown happens there is an early response of incredulity. Congratulations on your approach which I respect.

  13. This week I listened on line to a 7 minute meditation demo on line video at Innapeace which was the most effective that I have heard. If you are interested in creating one as good, I am sure it will enable the joys of meditation to be available to many more that would not otherwise know.
